Hope to see you next year Joe! ***** Received an email from Jimmy Clayton last week. Thought I would share it with you. Dear Stuart, I just wanted to share some with you concerning our situation after the tornado. On April 27, tornadoes went through Alabama. My wife(Wanda Myers, Mainland Class of '60) of six years, and I live in Pleasant Grove. The damage on our house was very minimal from the destruction occurring 100 yards from our house, where the main part of the tornado traveled. Everybody in Pleasant Grove has their story of the tornado, where they were, what happened, the aftermath, etc. Through all the deaths, injuries, destruction, and heartache, there is good to be found. The churches of the community, immediately banded together to provide the basic needs, i.e., food, clothing, water, and shelter, for the needy and homeless. The water system was tainted and hundreds upon hundreds of gallons of bottled water flowed in through donations. Depots were set up throughout the community which had water, food and supplies for people. People got what they needed and left the rest for the next person. The church to which we belong was designated for the clothes. There were so many clothes donated that we had to stop taking clothes because there was not any place to store them. I believe we could have clothed all of Birmingham. The churches were the staging areas for the volunteers to be sent out into the community to start cleaning rubble. Different volunteer groups, not just churches, were taking water and snacks to other volunteers who were laboring by sawing trees and carrying debris to the street. We always hear the bad from the news, and I wanted to share some good news that you will not hear on TV or see in newspapers. The best compliment came from FEMA, of all places. A FEMA person made the comment, “This is the only disaster where FEMA has been, where they took a backseat to churches.” Jimmy Clayton, Class of '62 .
